The Nine Centers of the bodygraph

In Human Design, the Centers are the nine energy hubs of the BodyGraph, each linked to a specific function in life.

They form the foundation of how energy moves through you and how you engage with the world.

Defined Centers (colored in) provide stable, consistent energy, while undefined Centers (white) are open to influence and amplification from others.

By understanding your Centers, you gain insight into your strengths, your vulnerabilities, and the unique wisdom available to you.

Defined Centers

DEFINITION occurs when both gates at either end of a channel are activated by a planet. The gate and it’s harmonic gate link two centres through a channel. Definition operates in a very specific way, creating a fixed and consistent frequency in the life force.

These DEFINED areas represent inherent traits that are independent of external influence, and therefore form a reliable source of inner authority that is a valuable alternative to the rational mind.

Decision making

How do you navigate your openness and express the gifts of your defined centers? In Human Design, correct decision-making is a mechanical tool for balancing the interaction between your defined and undefined Centers. This process is guided by your Strategy and Inner Authority.

We don’t truly “make” or “take” decisions—that’s the vanity of the mind. Instead, decisions are experienced through awareness. Ideally, your decisions arise from your defined centers, because these are consistent and reliable. Each Type, also the Reflector with no definition, has a unique manual for living in alignment with their true self.

Open Centers

When a center is undefined, it shows as a white space on your chart. There is no consistent internal energy in that area of life. Instead, you absorb and amplify energy from others, offering opportunities for wisdom and learning through experience.

However, if you’re not aware of your openness, you may identify strongly with everything that comes in. Your mind will try to understand and control it by offering you a way out. Most of humanity are heavily conditioned through these open centers.

Activated gates in undefined Centers are like personal antennas, picking up the energy and wisdom of those around us. Their potential is unlocked only when they connect with someone who completes the channel through the corresponding harmonic gate.

These hanging gates naturally seek interaction, which can lead to attachments or co-dependent patterns. These are Not-Self strategies we adopt from perceived lack, rather than authentic expression.

This is both our vulnerability and our growth. The way through is your Strategy and Authority, guiding you to act in alignment with your true self, not the energy of others.
