Heartfelt discoveries about the Ego in Sofia

✨The Ego (Will Center) Is Not What We Think It Is

One of the most confronting and liberating sessions at the Human Design Festival in Sofia was the deep dive into the Ego / Heart / Will center, a lecture hold by Sonja Beijering- Human Design Analist and Teacher.

Because this is where most organisational conditioning lives: quietly, daily, unquestioned.

The Ego is not about arrogance, It’s about willpower, commitment, promises, deals, value and support.

And here’s the part most leaders miss:

Only ~35% of people have a defined Ego.
~65% have an open Ego.

Yet we’ve built workplaces as if everyone should:
• prove themselves
• push consistently
• commit on demand
• deliver willpower on tap

That’s not leadership💥
That’s structural mismatch.

What the Ego actually does

The Ego is a motor, but it’s not meant to run continuously.

• Sacral = sustainable workforce energy
• Solar Plexus = mood-dependent social energy
• Root = short-term pressure / adrenaline
• Ego (Will) = backup power for promises made correctly

When Ego is used as a primary fuel source, burnout is inevitable.

Defined Ego (35%)

Defined Ego broadcasts will.

It’s consistent, fixed, value-driven.
It knows what it can commit to and what it won’t.

But when conditioned, it turns into:
• over-promising
• proving worth through exhaustion
• pushing others to “be like me”

Open Ego (65%)

Open Ego receives and amplifies will.

It’s flexible, sensitive to value and deeply relational.
But when conditioned, it becomes:
• people-pleasing
• over-committing to avoid disappointing
• tying self-worth to performance

Many “high performers” are not powerful, they’re over-adapted.

The organisational BLIND SPOT

Most friction isn’t personal, It’s Ego misuse inside the group system.

• Open Ego people trying to keep up with Defined Ego expectations
• Defined Ego leaders assuming everyone has the same will capacity
• Commitments made without energetic authority
• Burnout framed as a personal failure instead of a design flaw

This is why good people break inside bad structures.

The business truth

Ego energy is tribal.
It exists to support the group through correct exchange:
work ↔ value
promise ↔ delivery
support ↔ reciprocity

Not to prop up broken systems.

When you stop forcing willpower and start placing it correctly, something radical happens:
• fewer promises
• clearer commitments
• stronger trust
• sustainable performance

My biggest takeaway and Thank You Sonja Beijering- Human Design Analist en Docent from another Defined Ego Human Being🙏❤️ for the great lecture provided in Sofia: Willpower is not a character trait, it’s a design resource and it must be respected!

Leaders don’t need “more motivated people”, they just need structures that stop misusing the Ego!

🪞Reflection question:
Where in your organisation are people trying to prove instead of being correctly placed?
